    Phishing: The Digital Scam That Wants Your Click More Than Your Money

    Phishing is when scammers impersonate someone you trust—like your bank, your boss, or Microsoft—to trick you into clicking a link, downloading a file, or handing over sensitive info. It’s cheap, effective, and everywhere. And yes, it can hit your small business harder than you think.

    Phishing is successful because it preys on three human traits:

    1. Trust: The sender looks familiar (your bank, your IT team, your CEO).

    2. Urgency: “Click now or lose access.” “Approve payment or the deal dies.”

    3. Distraction: You’re busy, in a rush, or not paying full attention.

    It's not just email anymore, either:

    • Smishing = phishing via SMS

    • Vishing = phishing via voice calls

    • Business Email Compromise (BEC) = fake invoices, fake wire transfers, real consequences

    Real-world example:

    A bookkeeper gets an email from the “CEO” asking for an urgent wire transfer to close a deal.
    She acts fast—$18,000 sent.
    A day later? The CEO says, “What transfer?”
    Turns out, the domain was fake—ceo@company-pay.com instead of ceo@company.com.

    Phishing attacks don’t hack systems—they hack people.
    And with AI, they’re getting more convincing by the minute.

    How to fight phishing:

    • ✅ MFA (multi-factor authentication): Even if your password is stolen, MFA keeps attackers out

    • ✅ Security awareness training: Teach your team how to spot the red flags

    • ✅ Email security tools: Use platforms that block known phishing domains and scan links/files

    • ✅ Zero-trust mindset: Don’t trust, verify. Especially when the message sounds off

    • ✅ Hover before you click: Always check the actual URL hiding behind a link

    And remember:

    Microsoft will never email you asking for your password.
    The IRS will never text you about Bitcoin.
    Your CEO is not asking you to buy 50 Apple gift cards.
